ICL surgery in Korea

Lens-based vision correction that preserves the eye’s natural lens.

THE SHORT ANSWER

An implantable collamer lens (ICL) is placed inside the eye while the natural lens remains. It may be considered for suitable patients with myopia, including some who are not candidates for corneal laser surgery. It is different from cataract lens replacement.

ICL is not cataract surgery

ICL supplements the natural lens; cataract surgery removes and replaces a cloudy lens. Do not assume that every “lens implant” package refers to the same operation. Ask for the exact lens name, purpose, and regulatory status for the treatment being proposed.

Measurements and lens availability

Suitability depends on more than prescription. The surgeon assesses internal eye anatomy and other measurements to plan lens size and power. Ask whether a toric lens is required and whether ordering could affect your travel schedule.

Questions about safety

Discuss pressure changes, cataract formation, infection, glare, halos, and the possible need for another procedure. Although a lens can sometimes be removed or exchanged, that requires further surgery and does not mean the original operation is risk-free.

Your follow-up plan

Request the schedule for early pressure and lens-position checks, ongoing monitoring, and records to share with your US eye doctor. Clarify who pays for additional examinations or treatment if your plans change.

Bring these questions to your consultation

  • Which lens model and size do you recommend, and why?
  • Does the quote cover one eye or both eyes?
  • Does a toric lens need to be ordered in advance?
  • What long-term monitoring will I need in the US?
